Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, (Dementia is a syndrome displaying symptoms including loss of memory, judgment and reasoning, and changes in mood, behaviour and communication abilities.) It is a progressive, degenerative disease of the brain which causes thinking and memory to become seriously impaired.

Seven Things You Can Do to Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease… Maybe

An interesting study published by researchers at the University of California estimated up to fifty per cent of all Alzheimer cases might be attributable to certain behaviors or conditions. These conditions include physical inactivity, smoking, depression, low education, hypertension, obesity and diabetes. Others say to please note the operative word is “might”.

For instance, The US National Institutes of Health panel of experts concluded last year that “no evidence of even moderate scientific quality exists to support the association of any modifiable factor.”

Research on the causes of Alzheimer’s is in its infancy and much work needs to be done. In the meantime, paying attention to these seven factors and doing something to improve your overall health certainly can’t hurt! Read the full article from The New York Times by Pam Belluck
